Lab Tests Before Surgery

Your health and safety are our main priority. Our specialists ensure that the proper lab tests are conducted before you have surgery to reduce the risk of complications.

Why Are Lab Tests Done Before Surgery?

These pre-op tests are meant to catch any symptoms or conditions that may complicate surgery if not found and addressed, such as:

  • Illnesses
  • Lung conditions
  • Heart conditions
  • Blood sugar levels
  • Pregnancy

What Tests are Routinely Done Before Surgery?

Routine tests such as urinalysis, blood count and more are done to help diagnose any issues or concerns before surgery. Other tests that maybe done include:

  • Pregnancy test
  • Coagulation test
  • Potassium test
  • Glucose test

Aside from lab tests, your doctor may also order routine tests like CT scan, x-rays or an MRI. Some doctors may want to look at your heart before going into surgery and may include an EKG, echocardiogram, cardiac stress or angiogram test.

If you have any additional questions, reach out to your doctor before your surgery.

When to Have These Tests Before Surgery

Before your procedure, make sure to consult with your provider on how much time is needed between the tests and your upcoming surgery. Depending on the type of test and the lab, the results may take a few days.
