Questions About Cardiac or Pulmonary Rehab

Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

If you have had a recent heart attack or procedure, surgery or procedure, we can help you regain your strength. We’ll work closely with your physician and health care team to develop a customized program for you.

We offer guided and supervised exercise programs, individual and group classes and risk-factor modifications, such as stress management and food choices.

When Would I Need Cardiac Rehab?

Your physician may recommend cardiac rehabilitation if you’ve had any of these conditions or procedures:

  • Angioplasty or cardiac stent placement recovery
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Heart attack (recovery or prevention)
  • Heart disease
  • Heart surgery or heart transplant recovery
  • High blood pressure and elevated cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Obesity-related conditions
  • Smoking cessation
  • Stress reduction

How Will Rehab Therapy Help Me?

The lifestyle changes you make when you go through a cardiac rehab program can improve your overall health and prevent future heart problems.

How Does the Cardiac Rehab Program Work?

Our cardiac rehabilitation program consists of three phases:

Inpatient Program – Phase 1

If you’ve had heart surgery, cardiac rehabilitation may begin in the hospital with low-level, progressive physical activity. You and family members will learn about heart disease. You’ll also learn how to manage your care after discharge from the hospital.

Outpatient Program – Phase 2

The outpatient program provides self-monitoring skills and tools for a healthy lifestyle. You’ll follow monitored exercise sessions three times a week. You and your family will also receive education on diet, exercise and stress management.

Maintenance Program – Phase 3

In this phase, you’ll have the opportunity to build upon the progress you made in Phases 1 and 2. This program can also be beneficial if you’re at risk of developing heart disease but have not yet required surgical intervention.

Phase 3 includes a supervised exercise program and ongoing support to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program

Our pulmonary rehabilitation program can help improve your quality of life if you have a chronic lung disease. Our pulmonary rehab team will tailor a plan to your needs and abilities, so you can feel better and perform daily activities with less shortness of breath. Through a guided exercise program, you’ll work toward increasing your aerobic tolerance and to improving your muscle endurance, flexibility and strength.

What Will I Learn With Pulmonary Rehab?

During pulmonary rehabilitation, you will participate in and learn about:

  • Breathing strategies
  • Energy conservation techniques
  • Exercise training
  • Motivational counseling
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Your lung disease or condition and how to manage it

How Do I Know If Pulmonary Rehab Will Help Me?

Your physician will refer you for pulmonary rehab if it’s right for you. Pulmonary rehabilitation may benefit you if you have any of these conditions:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD)
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Emphysema
  • Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
  • Lung transplant (does not replace medical therapy)
  • Restrictive lung disease

How Often Will I Go?

Sessions will depend on your physician’s orders and the specific location where you are having your therapy.
