Swallowing & Reflux Services

The Swallowing and Reflux Services at Banner – Desert Medical Center brings together a team of gastro-esophageal specialists who diagnose and treat disorders of the throat, esophagus and stomach through medical and surgical interventions.

The most common conditions treated are gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and swallowing conditions such as achalasia, dysphasia, and upper and lower esophageal sphincter disorders. Our experts also treat Barrett’s esophagus, often diagnosed in people with long-term gastroesophageal reflux disease.

What swallowing and reflux testing is available?

  • High-resolution esophageal manometry (HRM) - The purpose of an esophageal manometry test is to evaluate the motor function of the esophagus. It also helps evaluate the causes of gastric reflux, heartburn, difficulty swallowing (Dysphagia), and functional chest pain.
  • Anorectal manometry - The Purpose of the anorectal manometry is to test the function and coordination of the anal sphincter and pelvic floor muscles when conditions such as constipation or incontinence are a concern.
  • Esophageal 24- hour pH testing for heartburn - Twenty – four hour pH testing measures and records the amount and severity of stomach content backing up into the esophagus. The test can detect if the content of reflux is acidic or non – acidic.
  • Bravo pH monitoring - The Purpose of the bravo is to identify the cause of heartburn. This test allows the doctor to evaluate your heartburn symptoms and determine the frequency and duration of acid coming up to the esophagus in a 48- or 96-hour period.
  • Small Bowel Capsule Endoscopy - PillCam SB is a capsule that you swallow that takes pictures of your small intestine.  For this procedure, you will have to ingest the capsule that is about the size of a vitamin tablet, which contains its own camera and light source.
