Cardiac Rehabilitation Services

What is cardiac rehabilitation?

Recovering after heart surgery or a heart procedure is an important part of protecting your long-term heart health. Cardiac rehabilitation, often called cardiac rehab, is a structured program designed to help you regain strength, improve overall wellness and lower the risk of future heart problems.

At Banner Health, our cardiac rehabilitation specialists create personalized recovery plans based on your health history, procedure and goals. Your program may include supervised exercise, nutrition guidance and supportive activities designed to help you feel stronger and more confident as you recover.

To keep recovery engaging and motivating, some programs may also include therapeutic recreation options such as seated group exercises or interactive activities, when appropriate.

What happens during cardiac rehabilitation?

Cardiac rehabilitation is typically completed in three phases, each designed to support your recovery and long-term heart health.

Phase I: In-hospital recovery

Cardiac rehab often begins in the hospital shortly after you leave the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CICU). You may continue recovery in the Progressive Care (Telemetry) Unit or a rehabilitation setting before going home.

During this phase, the focus is on:

  • Education about medications, nutrition and heart disease risk factors
  • Gentle movement and activity as approved by your care team
  • Helping you safely transition from intensive monitoring to more independent activity

This early phase helps lay the foundation for a safe recovery.

Phase II: Outpatient cardiac rehabilitation

Phase II takes place in an outpatient setting after you leave the hospital. This phase typically includes monitored exercise sessions several times a week, often three days per week.

Outpatient cardiac rehab may also include:

  • Education on following a heart-healthy diet
  • Guidance on reducing stress and managing it effectively
  • Support for you and your family as you build healthy habits

Your care team closely monitors your heart rate, blood pressure and symptoms during exercise to help ensure safety and steady progress.

Phase III: Maintenance and long-term heart health

The final phase of cardiac rehabilitation focuses on maintaining heart-healthy habits over time. You’ll continue with structured exercise and receive ongoing guidance to support long-term cardiovascular health.

Phase III can also benefit people with heart disease risk factors who want to improve heart health and reduce the chance of needing future procedures.

How long does recovery take after heart surgery?

Recovery time varies based on the type of heart surgery or procedure, your age and your overall health. In general, recovery after open heart surgery may take six weeks to six months.

Throughout recovery, your Banner Health care team is focused on:

  • Managing pain and discomfort
  • Helping you rebuild strength and endurance
  • Supporting a safe return to daily activities

Your cardiac rehabilitation plan is designed to progress at a pace that’s right for you.
