Lab Testing and Diagnostics

Safe and convenient lab testing near you

Lab tests play a key role in diagnosing conditions, guiding treatment and checking your overall health. Banner Health offers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient lab services so you can get the testing you need quickly and safely. Our team works closely with your doctor to ensure accurate results and timely follow-up.

Whether you need routine labs during an annual physical or testing to investigate a new symptom, we are here to help.

Common screenings and diagnostic tests

General chemistry

General chemistry tests measure different chemicals in your blood to help evaluate organ function and detect potential concerns early.

Common general chemistry tests include:

  • Blood glucose, used to screen for diabetes
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2), helps assess lung and kidney function
  • Potassium and calcium, which monitor heart, nerve and muscle health
  • Total protein, which can signal nutrition or liver concerns
  • Lipid panel, including:
    • Total cholesterol
    • Triglycerides
    • HDL (good cholesterol)
    • LDL (bad cholesterol)
  • Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP)
  • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP)

General hematology

A Complete Blood Count (CBC) is the most common hematology test. It checks red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets to help your doctor learn more about your overall health.

A CBC can help diagnose or monitor:

  • Anemia
  • Infection
  • Inflammatory conditions
  • Blood cancers or bone marrow disorders
  • Blood loss

Throat culture and rapid strep testing

If you have a sore throat, your doctor may use a swab to test for infection. These tests can help diagnose:

  • Strep throat
  • Pneumonia-causing bacteria
  • Tonsillitis
  • Whooping cough (pertussis)
  • Meningitis-causing bacteria

A rapid strep test may be used for quick results, with a culture for confirmation if needed.

Urine tests

Urine testing helps assess kidney function and detect metabolic or systemic health concerns.

Urine tests may help identify:

  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Diabetes
  • Liver problems
  • Kidney disease
  • Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance
  • Some metabolic conditions

Special chemistry and molecular tests

Specialty lab tests provide deeper insight into specific medical conditions. These may include:

  • Thyroid function testing (TSH and related markers)
  • Cardiac markers for suspected heart damage (like troponin)
  • A1C to monitor long-term blood sugar control
  • PSA (prostate-specific antigen)
  • Ferritin to evaluate iron storage
  • HIV screening
  • Vitamin D levels
  • COVID-19 PCR and rapid antigen tests
  • Sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea
  • Genetic and molecular tests to guide treatment decisions for certain conditions

Therapeutic drug monitoring may also be used to ensure safe medication dosing, such as:

  • Digoxin
  • Dilantin
  • Carbamazepine
  • Valproic acid
  • Vancomycin

Rapid diagnostic tests

Rapid tests provide results in minutes and may be used when symptoms come on suddenly. These tests can detect:

  • Strep throat
  • Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
  • Influenza (flu)
  • COVID-19

Inpatient lab services

If you are staying in the hospital, lab tests may be performed routinely to monitor your health and guide treatment. Blood tests can help assess:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding or anemia
  • Immune function
  • How well your organs are working
  • Response to medications or new treatments

Your doctor will explain why any test is being done and ensure you feel comfortable with the process.

Outpatient lab services

Outpatient labs are often used for:

  • Annual physicals
  • Pre-surgery testing
  • Chronic condition monitoring
  • New symptoms or health changes

We offer many convenient lab locations in partnership with Sonora Quest Laboratories in Arizona and Horizon Laboratory in Northern Colorado.

Your doctor will help determine the right tests to help support your best health.
