At Banner Health, we offer a full range of gastroenterology diagnostic and screening services to help identify and manage digestive health conditions. Our team includes experienced gastroenterologists, specially trained nurses and technicians, and care coordinators who guide you through every step of the digestive diagnostic process from prep instructions to follow-up care.

Whether you’re experiencing ongoing digestive symptoms or due for routine screening, our goal is to provide clear diagnostic answers and next-step guidance in a comfortable, supportive setting.

What digestive diagnostics and screenings are available?

We offer several digestive diagnostic tests and screening procedures to evaluate digestive issues. Some may be performed during an outpatient visit, while others may require short-term sedation or preparation at one of our dedicated gastroenterology endoscopy centers.

Common digestive diagnostic and screening services include:

  • Anorectal manometry and biofeedback – Evaluates how the muscles in your rectum and anus are functioning. Often used to assess chronic constipation or incontinence.
  • Catheter-free pH testing – A diagnostic test that uses a small wireless capsule to measure acid levels in your esophagus, helping to diagnose GERD (acid reflux)
  • Esophageal motility testing – Measures how well your esophagus moves food and liquid to your stomach. Often used for swallowing issues.
  • Esophageal pH monitoring – Tracks acid levels in your esophagus over 24 hours to identify reflux or heartburn-related issues.
  • Colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy – Colorectal cancer screening tests that allow your doctor to examine the large intestine for inflammation, polyps or bleeding.
  • Gastroscopy (upper endoscopy) – A diagnostic endoscopy that examines the esophagus, stomach and small intestine. Often used to check for ulcers, inflammation or abnormal tissue.
  • ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) – Combines X-ray and endoscopy to examine your liver, bile ducts and pancreas.

What symptoms or conditions may require digestive diagnostic testing?

Your doctor may recommend diagnostic testing or screening if you’re experiencing:

  • Ongoing heartburn or acid reflux
  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Unexplained stomach or abdominal pain
  • Nausea, vomiting or bloating
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Blood in your stool
  • Weight loss without trying

You may also need routine digestive screenings like colonoscopies starting at age 45, or earlier if you have a family history or other risk factors.
