Aromatherapy

What is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a type of complementary therapy that uses natural plant oils called essential oils. These oils come from flowers, bark, leaves, roots and other parts of plants. When breathed in or applied to the skin, essential oils may support both emotional and physical well-being.

Aromatherapy is not a cure for medical conditions, but it can help ease uncomfortable symptoms. Many people use aromatherapy along with their prescribed treatments as part of a whole-person approach to care.

Aromatherapy at Banner Health

Hospital stays and medical treatments can feel overwhelming. At Banner Health, trained staff offer aromatherapy to help patients feel more relaxed during treatment and recovery. Depending on your needs, essential oils may be:

  • Used during a gentle hand or foot massage
  • Placed on a cotton ball or piece of gauze so you can breathe in the soothing scent

Aromatherapy can help reduce stress or nausea from procedures and create a more calming environment to support healing.

How aromatherapy works

Aromatherapy uses pure essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances. When the aroma is breathed in or absorbed through the skin, it may:

  • Lower stress and promote relaxation
  • Reduce nausea and mild discomfort
  • Support better sleep
  • Improve overall mood and emotional well-being
  • Enhance focus or alertness when needed

Responses vary from person to person, but many find aromatherapy to be a comforting, low-risk option during care.

Benefits of aromatherapy

Aromatherapy may support:

  • Relaxation and stress reduction
  • Relief from minor discomfort or muscle tension
  • Less nausea from medications or treatment
  • Improved sleep and rest
  • A boost to your body’s natural wellness response

Talk with your care team to see if aromatherapy could be a safe option based on your health and treatment plan.

Common essential oils used in aromatherapy

Different essential oils can have different effects. At Banner Health, we may use blends such as:

  • Roman chamomile and lavender – helps reduce stress and anxiety
  • Peppermint – supports alertness and may help with fatigue or nausea
  • Lavender and clary sage – promotes relaxation and better sleep

Your team will tailor aromatherapy to your preferences and avoid scents you may be sensitive to.

When to talk with your care team

Although aromatherapy is generally safe, it may not be right for everyone. Your provider can help you understand whether aromatherapy fits into your treatment plan, especially if you are pregnant or have allergies or breathing conditions.

If you’re interested in trying aromatherapy, ask a member of your Banner Health care team during your stay or appointment.
