Athletic Training Services

For any athlete, when an injury occurs, the decision on where to go for evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation is a crucial decision that can affect their longevity in a sport. At Banner Health Sports Medicine, we provide athletes with the highest level of care and dedicated treatment to ensure that they can return to play as safely and quickly as possible.

What Is an Athletic Trainer?

Athletic Trainers (ATCs) are highly skilled healthcare professionals who specialize in the treatment and rehabilitation of athletic related injuries and work under the guidance of a physician. They are certified by a national board and licensed by the state in which they work. Their scope of practice includes: evaluation of injuries and illnesses, rehabilitation of athletic injuries, emergency preparedness, wellness and prevention, education and therapeutic modality treatment.

Our athletic trainers work closely with physicians, physical therapists, coaches and other members of the healthcare and athletic industries to ensure complete communication and a full recovery. Banner Health ATCs stay in close contact with high school sports programs, clubs and youth leagues.

How Is Athletic Training Used When Working with Athletes with Concussions?

Athletic trainers are commonly used to assist coaches and physicians with progressing the athlete through the return to play protocol when recovering from a concussion. Athletic trainers also educate the community on concussion awareness. It’s important to have precautionary education around concussions like reducing the risk of a concussion. Concussion protocols may include information on:

  • Concussion management
  • Baseline Assessment Symptom Scale
  • Concussion Assessment Symptom Scale
  • Emergency Action Plan
  • Removal from play
  • Return to play

Let the team at Banner Health help educate and teach you about athletic training for concussions.
