Simulation Courses

Banner Simulation System is one of the country's largest simulation education programs to train physicians, nurses, allied health providers and emergency responders.  We use mannequins, simulators and virtual-reality programs to offer the next generation of learning. We provide a unique learning experience for health care providers by offering a wide range of courses to train and improve skills.

Select from one of the courses below:

Banner Simulations System is the only entity in Arizona that is approved to offer Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery testing.

FLS provides surgical residents, fellows and practicing surgeons an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of laparoscopic surgery in a consistent, scientifically accepted format; and to test cognitive, surgical decision-making, and technical skills, all with the goal of improving the quality of patient care.

FLS was designed for surgical residents, fellows and practicing surgeons to learn and practice laparoscopic skills and to have the opportunity to definitely measure and document those skills.

The FLS Test measures cognitive knowledge, case/problem management skills and manual dexterity.

The FLS program content has been endorsed by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and is a joint educational offering of SAGES and ACS.  FLS is also CME accredited.

Our goal:

  • Education of relevant indications, procedural aspects and complications of the operation.
  • Generate the motor skills necessary for safe and efficient link placement.

The two-part curriculum is composed of independent and supervised directions. Initially, the student will review a computer-based didactic session as well as a take-home journal article.

After passing a qualifying examination, the student will participate in an in-class didactic session and line-placement exercise. The course culminates with the student undergoing a rigorous evaluation of motor skills and assessment of competence with regard to the encompassing procedural aspects related to central-line placement.

Course Objectives:

  • Describe indications and contraindications to central venous catheterization.
  • Describe and perform the procedure of internal jugular and subclavian vein catheterization with regard to:
    • Patient positioning
    • Sterile precautions
    • Anatomical features and landmarks
    • Insertion technique
    • Post-placement radiograph interpretation
  • Describe the common complications of central venous catheter insertion
  • Describe treatment for the common complications of central venous catheterization
  • Describe and perform the procedure of ultrasonographic guidance for internal jugular vein catheterization.
  • Describe some infection control issues/controversies with central line placement:
    • Hand washing
    • Use of maximal sterile barriers
    • Use of Chlorhexidine
    • Preparation relevance of catheter insertion site
    • Lack of benefit from antibiotic ointment
    • Recommendation to not use prophylactic antibiotic
    • Prompt removal of unnecessary lines.
