Fibromyalgia Care and Treatment

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition that affects how the brain and nervous system process pain signals. It causes widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue and other symptoms that can interfere with daily life.

While fibromyalgia was once thought to involve joint inflammation, research shows it is related to changes in how the central nervous system interprets pain. The pain is real and often described as deep, aching, burning or throbbing.

At Banner Health, we provide comprehensive fibromyalgia care focused on reducing pain, improving sleep and restoring quality of life.

What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a long-term disorder that causes widespread pain throughout the body. It is considered a central pain processing condition, meaning the brain becomes more sensitive to pain signals.

People with fibromyalgia may feel pain more intensely than others. Pain can shift from one area to another and may flare during times of stress, illness or poor sleep.

Fibromyalgia does not cause joint damage or inflammation like rheumatoid arthritis, but it can feel just as limiting.

Causes of fibromyalgia

The exact cause of fibromyalgia is not fully understood. Experts believe it develops from a combination of biological and environmental factors.

Possible contributors include:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Past infections
  • Physical trauma or injury
  • Emotional trauma or prolonged stress
  • Changes in brain chemistry
  • Central nervous system sensitivity

Research suggests the nervous system may amplify pain signals, making normal sensations feel painful.

Who is at risk for fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia affects approximately 2% to 4% of the population and is more common in women.

You may be at higher risk if you:

  • Have a family history of fibromyalgia
  • Have another chronic pain condition
  • Live with chronic stress
  • Experience disrupted sleep
  • Have autoimmune conditions

Fibromyalgia can occur at any age but is most often diagnosed in adulthood.

Signs and symptoms of fibromyalgia

The most common symptom of fibromyalgia is widespread pain lasting at least three months.

What does fibromyalgia pain feel like?

People often describe it as:

  • A constant dull ache
  • Deep muscle soreness
  • Burning or throbbing pain
  • Stiffness, especially in the morning

Pain typically affects both sides of the body and above and below the waist.

Other common fibromyalgia symptoms include:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Unrefreshing sleep
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Difficulty concentrating (“fibro fog”)
  • Memory problems
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Sensitivity to noise, temperature or touch
  • Irritable bowel symptoms

Because symptoms overlap with other conditions, proper evaluation is important.

How fibromyalgia is diagnosed

There is no single test to confirm fibromyalgia. Diagnosis is based on:

  • Widespread pain lasting at least three months
  • Symptom pattern and severity
  • Physical examination
  • Medical history

Your provider may order blood tests to rule out other conditions such as thyroid disease, rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.

Early diagnosis can help you begin treatment sooner and reduce symptom flare-ups.

Treatment for fibromyalgia

There is no cure for fibromyalgia, but symptoms can often be managed effectively.

A personalized treatment plan may include:

  • Medications to reduce pain and improve sleep
  • Low-impact exercise such as walking, swimming or tai chi
  • Stretching and physical therapy
  • Stress reduction strategies
  • Sleep improvement techniques
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Lifestyle adjustments

Consistent treatment often leads to improved function and reduced symptom severity.
