Banner Health is a provider of continuing medical education for physicians, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). Banner was awarded Accreditation with Commendation in 2013, the highest accreditation awarded by the ACCME.
ACCME accreditation seeks to assure both physicians and the public that continuing medical education (CME) activities provided by Banner meet the high standards of the Essential Areas, Elements, Policies, Criteria, and Standards for Accreditation as specified by the ACCME. The Banner CME department provides consultation for education planners interested in obtaining AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.

Banner CME Mission Statement
Banner Health exists to make health care easier, so life can be better. To fulfill this mission, the physicians and other health care professionals within the Banner Health system, one of the largest health systems in the country, must stay current with knowledge, skills and best practices within their fields.
Banner Health’s Continuing Medical Education (CME) program exists to provide educational opportunities to promote best practices that support optimal patient care and prepare physician leaders for directing health care change.
Goal of the CME Program
The goal of the Banner Health CME program is to promote excellent patient care through education for health care providers. Thus, physicians and other healthcare professionals will acquire knowledge to foster changes in their practices based on the information provided at Banner CME activities. Measures considered to evaluate efficacy will include measurable progress on clinical initiatives, implementation of practice improvements, and improved patient clinical outcomes.
The vision of the CME program is to be recognized as an exemplary provider of continuing medical education.
The CME program offers a variety of topics, supported by appropriate needs assessment, that include clinical practice gaps identified through the Banner Health quality programs. Overall, CME activities will be focused on the following global themes:
- Banner Health clinical initiatives
- Clinical updates, Practice innovations
- Advances in Research and Technology
- Public Health issues
- Regulatory compliance, Risk management
- Population Health Management
Programs are designed for and targeted at physicians and other healthcare professionals as some activities may also be relevant to multi-disciplinary allied health care teams. Services provided by the CME department include tracking and reporting accrued credits, and providing information for physicians seeking educational activities.
Type of Activities
Educational opportunities will be provided in a variety of settings and incorporate interactive formats, taking into consideration the setting, objectives and desired result:
- Conferences, workshops, symposia, journal clubs, recurring activities such as grand rounds and case conferences.
- Educational activities in electronic format
- Self learning materials
- Participation in performance improvement activities
- Outreach education
Banner Health may enter into joint-sponsorship arrangements with appropriate non-accredited organizations, upon approval of the CME director.
To support the mission of excellent patient care, Banner Health CME emphasizes the acquisition of knowledge, behavioral changes and clinical outcomes to evaluate the CME program.
