Celery Juice: Health Or Hoax?

The latest media darling? Celery juice. Because of this recent uptick in media coverage, you may be wondering if you should follow the new “wellness” trend.

We talked with Registered Dietitian Ashley Amaral, from Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix, to see if she thinks celery juice is worth the attention.

“Celery juice is commonly believed to enhance digestion, eliminate bloating, control blood sugar and decrease inflammation. Celery is 95% water and contains essential nutrients, such as folate, potassium, magnesium and vitamin K,” Amaral said. “But this is no better than any other superfood vegetables, such as kale or spinach.”

Not nearly as much research on celery juice has been conducted in humans to give a full picture of its acclaimed benefits compared to other health foods, such as avocados, blueberries or olive oil. There is also no dietary recommendation regarding the amount of celery an individual should consume.

Pros to drinking celery juice

Due to its electrolyte composition, celery juice may help with antioxidant function and inflammation, especially for athletes looking for a natural alternative sports drink.

“Celery juice is much lower in calories than the average sports drink, and there is no simple sugar. So, this may not be the best option for endurance athletes,” Amaral added.

Cons to drinking celery juice 

Large amounts of celery juice can interfere with iodine uptake and can result in a goiter (enlarged thyroid), especially for those that have a known thyroid issue.

“Celery juice can also interfere with certain medications, so always check with your provider before consuming,” said Amaral.

So, what is the ultimate answer to the burning question: Is celery juice a healthy option?

Advice to follow

There is no harm in consuming celery juice as part of a healthy eating pattern, but it should not replace your daily intake of other fruits and vegetables.

“It would be more beneficial to combine celery into a smoothie mixed with other fruits and vegetables to reap the full benefits of nutrients,” recommended Amaral. “If you are someone who struggles with consuming enough vegetables in your daily diet, then consuming celery juice is certainly more beneficial than not consuming them at all.”
