What Is the Prognosis for Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias are progressive, chronic conditions that last on average eight years. Nearly 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, making it the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Living with these diseases can create challenges for both you and your loved one. While there is currently no cure, there are medical and non-medical strategies to find success in daily living at each stage of the disease.

How Is Alzheimer’s Disease Treated?

The Alzheimer’s specialists at Banner Health believe those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease have the best chance at a quality life when they’re provided with as many options as possible. While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, treatments, including medications as well as non-drug therapies, are available to manage symptoms and improve the quality of life for patients and their caregivers.

Banner’s unique care model takes a personalized, multidisciplinary treatment approach that combines standard clinical therapies to manage symptoms and improve overall wellbeing with experimental treatment opportunities for every stage of Alzheimer’s. Our groundbreaking experimental treatments are offered at Banner Health’s three memory care centers of excellence.

Who Makes Up the Multidisciplinary Team?

The Alzheimer’s multidisciplinary care team includes your primary care physician, expert Alzheimer’s specialists, dementia specialists, researchers, neurologists, neuropsychologists, social workers and psychologists.

Additionally, Banner Health’s experienced neurological rehabilitation team includes physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists and therapeutic recreation specialists to deliver expert, compassionate care for a variety of sensory, motor, cognitive and behavioral issues. Neurological rehabilitation helps patients with Alzheimer’s disease improve function, reduce symptoms, regain mobility, build strength and endurance and improve overall well-being.

Can Vitamins and Supplements Treat Alzheimer’s?

Vitamins and supplements, such as vitamin E, are not proven to successfully treat Alzheimer’s disease. While vitamins and supplements from the internet or drugstores claim they can improve cognitive function, their safety and effectiveness hasn’t been validated.
