Healthy Trip Guidelines

What seems to be a long-standing truth for many travelers is getting sick when you get home. Could it be the excitement, the full itineraries or the germ-filled planes? Whatever the reason may be, many travelers battle sniffles, sore-throat and a cough when they get home.

But, it doesn’t have to be that way. Vivek Kesara, MD, a family medicine physician at the Banner Health Clinic in Chandler, helped uncover precautions you can take.

First and foremost, Dr. Kesara recommends getting a flu shot, and if you are around infants, getting the TDAP immunization to prevent whooping cough. Next, Dr. Kesara recommends using a multivitamin high in vitamin C and zinc, which have antioxidant properties to fight off bacteria and viruses. Products such as Airborne® can be used to help increase your vitamin-C and zinc intake.

While you are on vacation, there are a few things you can do to prevent getting sick, and they’re not things many people practice while traveling! However, eating a proper diet and getting exercise along with six to eight hours of sleep each night are essential to keep your immune system working properly.

With these tips in mind, enjoy your next vacation and stay healthy!
