What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a disease where cells in the breast grow out of control and form a tumor. Breast cancer often starts in the breast’s milk ducts. The tumor might only be found in the breast (localized) or it may have spread to other parts of the body (advanced).

Breast cancer isn’t just one disease. There are several types of breast cancer and treatment depends on the type, whether it has spread, your overall health and other factors.

Most breast cancers are diagnosed by routine screening mammograms. For patients that find their cancer prior to imaging, many note a breast lump as their first symptom, but not everyone notices a lump. Other symptoms may include skin color or texture changes, nipple discharge, or nipple or skin retraction (tightening).

If you do find a lump or spot any changes to your breast, you should talk to your doctor. The earlier breast cancer is diagnosed, the better the chance for successful treatment.

Who gets breast cancer?

Anyone can develop breast cancer but it is far more common in women. About one in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, while men account for about 1% of breast cancer cases.

Your risk increases as you get older and factors like family history or inherited changes in your genes can raise your chances. There are also lifestyle factors, like being overweight, having a sedentary lifestyle and drinking alcohol, that increase your risk of developing breast cancer. Understanding your risk can help you take steps toward prevention and early detection.
