What is pancreatic cancer?

The pancreas is an organ that’s found behind your stomach. It helps your body digest food and control your blood sugar.

Pancreatic cancer happens when cells in the pancreas grow out of control and form tumors. These tumors may spread to other organs nearby.

The most common type of pancreatic cancer is pancreatic adenocarcinoma, which begins in the ducts of the pancreas. There are also rarer types of pancreatic cancer, such as neuroendocrine tumors, which grow more slowly.

Early signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic cancer is sometimes called a “silent disease.” That’s because early symptoms can be mild or mistaken for other conditions. Symptoms can be different based on what type of pancreatic cancer you have, but common signs may include:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Belly or back pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Itching
  • Changes in stool
  • Dark-colored urine
  • Swelling in the belly
  • Being newly diagnosed with diabetes

Causes and risk factors for pancreatic cancer

Most of the time, it’s a mix of genetic and lifestyle factors that causes pancreatic cancer. You may be at higher risk if you:

  • Smoke or use tobacco
  • Have a family history of pancreatic or certain other cancers
  • Have chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cysts or diabetes
  • Are older than age 60
  • Have obesity

Learn how to reduce your pancreatic cancer risk factors and when to consider genetic testing.

How is pancreatic cancer diagnosed?

Pancreatic cancer can be hard to diagnose early. If your health care provider suspects pancreatic cancer, they may order these tests to diagnose pancreatic cancer and see how advanced it is:

  • Blood tests and tumor markers
  • Imaging such as CT scans, MRI or endoscopic ultrasound
  • Biopsy to confirm the diagnosis and stage

Your care team will use this information to guide the best treatment plan for you.
